Are you tired of not being able to sleep?
Perhaps you can’t get to sleep in the first place. Maybe you wake during the night and can’t drop off again, or you’re wide awake far earlier than you want to be. Or perhaps you seem to sleep for long enough but still don’t feel properly rested.
Whatever form it takes, poor sleep can affect almost everything else. It’s harder to concentrate, cope with stress, or even to enjoy your day when you’re exhausted.
And sometimes, after you’ve had sleep problems for a while, worrying about sleep becomes part of the problem too.

I had online sessions with Debbie to help with long-term sleeping problems and was amazed at how effective they were after all else had failed. The effects have continued since the sessions ended, and Debbie’s approach definitely made a big difference. SE
When Trying to Sleep Keeps You Awake
Sleep is one of those things we expect to do without thinking about it. But once it becomes difficult, it’s very easy to start trying to make it happen.
You go to bed hoping that tonight will be better. You check the time. You work out how many hours you’ll get if you fall asleep now. You start thinking about how tired you’ll be tomorrow.
And, of course, none of that makes you feel particularly sleepy.
If this sounds familiar, hypnotherapy may be able to help you break that cycle.
Can Hypnotherapy Help With Sleep Problems?
Hypnotherapy for sleep isn’t just about relaxing you for an hour or giving you suggestions to “sleep deeply tonight”.
We’ll start by looking at the patterns in your sleep problem. When did it start? What happens when you go to bed? What are you thinking and feeling when you can’t sleep? What have you already tried?
Then we can look at the things that might be keeping the problem going.
These might include stress or anxiety, worrying at bedtime, difficulty switching off, unhelpful habits around sleep, or simply becoming so used to being awake in bed that your brain has started to expect it.
Everyone is different, so your therapy will be tailored to you rather than based on a standard sleep programme.
Hypnotherapy for Insomnia
Insomnia can mean having difficulty falling asleep, waking repeatedly during the night, waking earlier than you want to, or regularly getting poor-quality sleep.
Sometimes there was an obvious reason why the problem began. Perhaps a stressful period, illness, or a change in circumstances. But the original problem can disappear while the disturbed sleep pattern carries on.
This is where therapy can be particularly useful. Rather than concentrating only on what started the problem, we can look at what’s keeping it going now and what needs to change.
How Does Hypnotherapy Help With Sleep Problems?
Our first session gives us plenty of time to talk about what’s been happening and what you’d like to achieve.
I’ll ask about your sleep, but we’ll also look at anything else that seems relevant. Sleep doesn’t exist in isolation, and stress, anxiety, habits and what’s happening in the rest of your life can all play a part.
I’ll then use hypnotherapy and other appropriate techniques to help you make the changes we’ve identified.
You don’t have to clear your mind, concentrate particularly hard or make yourself relax. And you won’t be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis. You remain aware and in control.
Things You Can Try Yourself
(If you haven’t already!)
There are plenty of practical things you can try first, including looking at your bedtime routine and environment, keeping a sleep diary and identifying things that may be affecting the quality of your sleep.
I’ve brought many of these together in my article Tips to get a good night’s sleep.
On the other hand, if you’ve already tried self-help and you’re still struggling, it may be time to get some help
