Anxiety can occur in many different forms, such as:

  • social anxiety or shyness,
  • health anxiety,
  • separation anxiety,
  • worrying at or about work,
  • worrying about travelling, presentations, exams or tests.

Sometimes, feeling anxious happens at random intervals, when there doesn’t appear to be any particular logic or reason to what you’re experiencing (generalised anxiety disorder). At other times, worrying can be linked to life changes such as changing jobs or family situations, or physical changes like menopause.

Whatever the reason, hypnotherapy can help you relax, improve your confidence, reduce worrying and let you start to enjoy life again.

What is anxiety?

It’s supposed to be a way of keeping us safe. If we weren’t anxious about anything at all, we’d get into some very dangerous situations! At the right time and place, worrying focuses our minds and makes us careful.

But, sometimes, we lose the ability to put the real level threat into perspective. We may not even be sure why we feel anxious because, logically, we can see that there’s no danger but, when this happens, emotions tend to overwhelm logic.

Symptoms of anxiety

As well as worry and intrusive negative thoughts, the physical symptoms of anxiety can be unpleasant and scary. You might experience:

  • Dizziness.
  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Tiredness and disturbed sleep.
  • Muscular aches and pains.
  • Depression.
  • Changes in the menstrual cycle (periods).
  • Pins and needles.
  • Headaches.
  • Stomach ache/nausea.

How to deal with anxiety

Some of these symptoms can, of course, be caused by physical conditions that need to be treated by your GP, and it’s wise to get these ruled out. Once they are, especially if your symptoms are relatively mild, you can do some things yourself to help reduce them. Download this flyer, or check out my blog, using the #anxiety and worry tag.

But hypnotherapy for anxiety can also help, and it often takes just a few sessions, online or in my office, to start to feel in control again. Therapy to reduce anxious thinking and feelings might involve helping you to find new ways to challenge the thoughts, relax and feel confident instead of worrying, and perhaps looking at when and why you first became anxious. Every course of hypnotherapy is different because every person is different.

As you’ll have seen elsewhere on this site, a hypnotherapist cannot simply click their fingers and compel you to change. You’ll need to practice and use the techniques you learn in the sessions. But if you are willing to do this, anxiety can be beaten.
