The meaning of dreams

Dreams are essentially stories our minds create while we’re asleep. They can be vivid and provoke strong emotions. Some seem to make sense and others are frankly a bit weird. Not all of us remember our dreams but we are all said to dream every night. It’s not clear why, but the most popular theory is that it’s a kind of psychological housekeeping. Dreaming helps us to relieve tensions, consolidate memories and process emotions. If that’s the case, it makes sense that dreams reflect what’s going on in our lives, even if they do so metaphorically.

Throughout history, people have attributed meaning and significance to dreams. Searching for this topic online you will have found a host of dream dictionaries. They all claim to tell you what your dreams really mean. But the problem with these is that they give the same meaning to everyone.

The very first book on the subject was Oneirocriticon or The Interpretation of Dreams. It was written by Artemidorus in the 2nd century. Artemidorus believed that dreams were entirely personal. As such, they should be interpreted in the context of the dreamer – their likes and dislikes, attitudes, personality and so on. Without knowing anything about the person, he said, a true interpretation is impossible. I’m inclined to agree with that.

Dream analysis and interpretation

Therapists have used dream interpretation or dream analysis for many years, especially recurring dreams. If you have the same dream repeatedly it seems to make sense that it’s significant for you. Have a look at this article which tells you more about dreams in therapy.

I’m happy to include dream analysis as part of your therapy. But you can also book a stand-alone dream interpretation session, in my office or online.

I use a broadly Gestalt approach, guiding you to interpret each symbol in your dream in turn and drawing out the meaning of the whole. I don’t use dream dictionaries or a “cookie-cutter” approach as each dreamer is unique.

Sessions are 60 minutes. If your dream analysis touches on issues that need further exploration or resolution, I’m happy to advise on how best to do this.
