COVID-19 Safety Guidelines for hypnotherapy clients

High-risk clients

If you have high-risk factors for COVID or you have had any condition or treatment in the last twelve months which could compromise your immunity you must gain written consent from a medical professional before undertaking face-to-face sessions. Online sessions are fine, of course.

Other clients: therapy during COVID

5 Jan 2021 - The CNHC has confirmed that the rules outlined below still apply in the new lockdown.

Hypnotherapists registered with the CNHC (of which I am one) meet the definition of  “other…health services, including services relating to mental health” contained in Section 47, Part 3 of the Schedule to The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (No. 4) Regulations 2020 and can therefore continue to practise and offer face-to-face sessions. However, this only applies to clients who have ‘an identified mental or physical health condition or injury that is causing them pain or having an adverse impact on their mobility or their quality of life’ and I can only offer therapy that supports you with that medical condition.

In effect, this means I can see you face-to-face for anything linked to a specific health condition such as anxiety, stress, IBS, insomnia etc. But if you wish to use hypnotherapy for another reason, we should work online. See this article for how online therapy works.

There will obviously be grey areas. If you are not sure how this applies to you, I am happy to chat and offer advice, (01977 678593), or you can email me.

Face-to-face appointments

Attendance

Therapy sessions will be, as always, on an appointment basis only.

You should not attend your appointment if you or anyone in your household or bubble:

  • is experiencing possible COVID symptoms such as a cough, high temperature, or breathlessness
  • has been in close contact with anyone who has or may have COVID
  • is waiting for a COVID test result or
  • has been asked to self-isolate by Test and Trace.

As long as you contact me before your appointment, no penalties for late cancellation will be enforced if you are unable to attend because of any of the reasons above.

You will be asked to sign a confirmation at each appointment that you have not been diagnosed with or exposed to COVID-19 in the last two weeks, and that you do not have symptoms or need to self-isolate.

In compliance with the advice issued by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, with whom I am registered) your temperature will also be taken on arrival by non-contact means and this will be recorded in your notes.

 If I have to self-isolate (for example, if I am contacted via NHS Test and Trace) I will have to cancel face-to-face appointments but will notify you as soon as I can and re-arrange the time and date of your appointment. 

 

Appointments

Appointments will run strictly to time to allow for thorough cleaning between clients.

The waiting room will be out of use, so please arrive no more than five minutes before your appointment and wait outside the building until you are called in.

You should come on your own if possible. Anyone accompanying you will not be able to enter the building (unless you are a child or a vulnerable adult who needs a chaperone).

Please arrive wearing a face covering (mask or visor), unless you are in an exempt group.

There is a QR code for those using the NHS test and trace app.

Please use the hand gel or wash your hands on entering the building and before leaving.

I will not be able to provide you with drinks or any other item that might be shared with other clients. Feel free to bring your own. The toilet will still be available if required.

We will maintain a 2m distance wherever possible, and I have a screen placed between us during the therapy session. Please don't be offended if I don't shake hands or offer a hug.

 

Payment 

Payment should be made before you attend, by bank transfer or Paypal and I will provide details of how to do this on request.

If you really have to pay by cash or cheque, please put the correct amount in a sealed envelope with your name on the outside. This will be isolated for 24 hours, after which I will send a receipt if one is required.

Between sessions

The client chair will be cleaned, and the chair covering will be replaced between appointments.

All surfaces will be cleaned and towels etc will be replaced for each client.

A guide to online hypnotherapy

Maybe you had never considered having therapy online, but it’s a real and viable alternative to face-to-face meetings and much less likely to be interrupted by local lockdowns etc.

Is it effective?

Yes, a 2014 study showed that it’s just as effective as face-to-face therapy. And others show that

  • significant improvements are possible with online therapy

  • results are equal, or in some cases better, to that of in-person therapy

  • client satisfaction is high.

If you’re still not sure, I am happy to arrange a brief chat online to allow you to test it out.

How it works

Online therapy is very similar to coming to a clinic, but without the travel! You give me a ring to chat through your situation and we arrange a time and date that suits us both.

You complete my online intake form and make payment 24 hours before the session and, when the time comes, you click on a link to enter your session.

Advantages

You feel safe and secure in your own home.

No travel time or costs.

No interruptions to your therapy due to local lockdowns, self-isolation issues etc.

The challenges (and what we can do about them)

The level of confidentiality is not as much under my control as it is in my clinic. It depends in part on the actions or failures of the online provider we use, as well as on myself. 

Also about confidentiality, you need to ensure you are in a place where others cannot interrupt or overhear you. See the advice on this below. 

Some people worry about the connection being broken during hypnosis, although in practice this is rarely a problem. But (just in case) I always include a suggestion that if you don’t hear my voice for a few minutes you will bring yourself out of trance feeling wonderful, and we can reconnect.

What do I need to provide?

  • A screen with an internet connection and Zoom installed. It is possible to access a Zoom meeting without an account but, in my experience, it works better if you have one. A free account is all you’ll need.

  • Bigger screens are better than small ones, and if you are using a phone or tablet, you’ll need to prop it up on something rather than hold it in your hand. (If you relax during trance enough to drop it, I can only see your ceiling!)

  • A place where you will not be overheard or interrupted by family, pets, phones, etc. This is partly to ensure your confidentiality but also to help you get the most from your therapy. Constantly breaking off to check on that worrying silence from your kids, for example, or to see whether the puppy is chewing your new shoes, will very likely have an impact on your success rates.

  • A comfortable place to sit or recline. Laying down is OK, but you may be more inclined to drop asleep laid on a bed, especially if you are tired.

  • Warm clothing - because many people don't move around much in trance, you may become chilled.

  • A second way of contacting you is useful, just in case we get cut off.

  • An open mind and a desire for change.

Hypnotherapy appointment times

Seeing clients is a rewarding and very important part of my working life, but as you'll know if you have read the 'about me' page, I also have to fit in training and writing commitments (the next book is due out late 2020). When you combine this with allowing extra time between appointments for cleaning under the COIVD regulations, I can currently only offer a limited number of appointments. These are usually Saturdays, but Wednesday mornings can be made available if you prefer to attend during the week.

Although I am happy to take phone calls in the early evening, I'm sorry that I cannot offer evening appointments.
