Generally speaking, 'regression' means 'going back to an earlier stage'. In hypnotherapy, it can be used in two different ways. One is to find out where problems, such as a phobia, came from and why they started. It typically involves exploring childhood experiences that might have triggered or contributed to the issues you are dealing with as an adult.
The other kind of hypnotic regression is when people seem to access memories that couldn't possibly belong to them - from earlier times in history and far distant places they have never visited. We use the term 'past life regression' to describe these experiences as if we are certain that's what they are, but there many explanations for what might be going on. Which one you like best will depend on your religious, spiritual and personal views.
And so on. In fact, there may not be just one explanation. Perhaps some are reincarnation, some are telepathy or gene memory and some are imagination. At present, it's impossible to know for sure and, as I said, your preferred explanation is likely to be linked to your beliefs.
Despite what you might have assumed, most people do not become Cleopatra or any other significant historical figure. After all, even if you take the reincarnation explanation, there can only be one re-incarnated Cleopatra alive now in the whole world, and the chances of her walking into my therapy room in Normanton seem very small! I don't want to seem cynical when I say this, and hope you will take it as it was meant - humorously - but across human history, most people have been quite ordinary, and generally so are the lives described in past life experiences.
Despite that, or maybe because of it, they are fascinating and often touch on themes and patterns that are important to you now, giving you insight about your values, interests and ideas.
Because of the varying explanations available, people undertake a past life experience for lots of different reasons. Some are driven by curiosity. Others have an interest in reincarnation, psychology, biology or even history. Others want to explore past lives to explain or shed light on events and attitudes they hold now.
It doesn't really matter where you think they come from, undergoing a past life regression can be a wonderful experience and I am happy to work with you, whatever your beliefs.
There are some health issues that might mean that hypnotherapy isn't suitable for you. See this page for more information. But assuming you would be able to use hypnotherapy, and you are over 18 years of age, you can take part in a past life regression.
Most PLR appointments run between one-and-a-half and two hours, and I'll provide you with a transcript, emailed within a week of the appointment.
Many people undergo the regression as a one-off experience, although past life regression can also be used as a therapeutic tool. Whichever way you approach it, the experience often highlights messages or themes that benefit you emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually or improve your wellbeing
If you want to explore multiple past lives or work with this in other ways (for example, as part of an ongoing course of hypnotherapy you are taking with me) please ask me for more information as the arrangments may be slightly different.
Very rarely, someone can't seem to get in touch with a past life experience in the session. This has happened to my clients just a handful of times over the years I've been in practice. I reduce my fee to 50% of the usual if this happens, just to cover my time. If you prefer to try again another day at no further charge instead, please ask.
The experience can be emotional but is perfectly safe. As I've said above, a past life experience can touch on things that are important to you in the here and now. For some people, this can bring up issues they want to explore further or deal with. If this happens, I'm happy to advise on how best to do this, and to offer hypnotherapy if you choose to go in that direction But there is no obligation to take further sessions with me.
If you are interested, please get in touch to ask whatever questions you have and/or to book an appointment. The fee is £100 for a two-hour session.
